At 4:00 pm, after a day of errands, including buying a birthday gift for her husband, Paul, Katherineās mother, Nancy, pulled up to their communal mailboxes with Katherine and her 9-year-old brother Chris in tow.
Katherine asked if she could walk home. Nancy agreedšsure was the last word she said to her daughter (3). Home was only four houses away, and it was a path Katherine knew. So while Katherine was to take the short way home, Nancy and Chris drove the long way.
